The Problem
A number of Maraes in the Northland region have been badly affected by flooding events over a number of years.
These Maraes have all done a lot of work to protect their building from future weather events, but still needed a solution for the entrances. This was primarily focused on the kitchen areas of each Marae.
Site Issues
Whilst most of the Maraes were constructed from block, there were a couple with bevel-backed weatherboards. As this is not perfectly flat, it proves to be a challenge when trying to install a bracket that needs to be watertight.
The Solution
A 600mm high Acquastop classic system was recommended for all the Maraes. These will very often need to be deployed by elderly people, so we had to ensure the weight of each barrier was manageable. In most cases, a barrier for a standard sized doors at 600mm high weighs around 12kg, so this works for most people.
For larger doors, we made use of the removable column in the Acquastop range. This enables the barriers to be smaller and lighter. Even with the extra step of deploying the column, a 3m wide entry can be deployed in under 2 minutes.
We were able to use high-quality sealant and rubber compounds to ensure the brackets installed on the bevel-backed weatherboards were watertight.
The Outcome
Supply Force installed the system in December 2025. As some of the maraes are very remote, the system can also be left in place over long periods, without anyone having to come out to specifically deploy the barriers. When needed to be removed, taking them out is fast, and the maraes can be used in the same manner as before.
Acquastop flood barriers
Designed in Italy and protecting homes for 30 years. The barriers are independently tested and used in countries all over the globe. They are rapid to deploy, take up minimal storage space and are highly effective.
